Cole Palmer Shines in Chelsea's Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Fulham

Chelsea’s new era under Alonso exploded into life with a chaotic, breathless 3-2 win over Fulham – and with Cole Palmer very much at the centre of it all.

It took 32 seconds for the tone of the afternoon to be set. Palmer, drifting into space before Fulham had even settled, slipped a perfectly weighted pass into Joao Pedro, who finished to give Chelsea the earliest of leads and the new head coach the perfect start to his Premier League reign.

From there, Chelsea attacked like a side intent on shedding the frustrations of last season in one go. The movement was sharper, the passing braver. Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro formed a front line that looked as if it had been playing together for years, not weeks.

Palmer, in particular, played like a man with a point to prove. Left out of England’s World Cup squad after a stop-start 2025-26 campaign ravaged by injuries and limited minutes, he now looks determined to make up for lost time. Asked how ready he felt for what lies ahead, he grinned and fired back: “Did you not watch the game? I’m only joking, I’m ready you know,” he told Sky Sport.

He did not hide from how hard the last year had been. “It was a difficult season with injuries and whatnot, but through the summer and since I’ve been back I’ve worked extra hard. Obviously with the injuries I’ve had to try and prevent them and work extra hard day in, day out. I know the talent I’ve got so I can put in performances like that.”

The pressure finally told again early in the second half. Allowed to wander into those awkward little pockets between Fulham’s midfield and defence, Palmer struck what proved to be the decisive goal in the 49th minute, capping a display that mixed craft with sheer relentlessness.

For him, this is not about one afternoon. The time spent watching from the stands last season has changed something. He spoke about seeing the game differently now, about feeling it more. The usually laid-back forward admitted that the enforced spell on the sidelines had pulled a different side of his personality to the surface.

“Normally I’m not an emotional person, the people who know me know I’m not usually bothered about things in life, but over the summer I rested, I recharged and yeah, I’m ready, and I’m hungry,” he said. That hunger has been channelled into conditioning and prevention work, a base he believes will carry him through the grind of a full Premier League campaign.

Alonso has wasted no time in building around that version of Palmer. His tactical set-up gave the 22-year-old licence to roam, to pop up between the lines, to drag Fulham’s shape out of sync. The interplay with Rogers and Joao Pedro was the highlight of Chelsea’s afternoon, the trio repeatedly combining to turn promising moves into real jeopardy.

The new manager was not shy about where he believes Chelsea’s ceiling lies. “I really enjoyed his performance,” Alonso told Sky Sports. “He played with responsibility and maturity, but also freedom. It is really important to me that we get the best out of Cole. I am happy for him and if we are going to have a good team, then we need a great Cole.”

Rogers had his own milestone to celebrate. By scoring on his Premier League debut for Chelsea, he became the first player to do so since Christopher Nkunku in December 2023. Yet when the cameras turned to him afterwards, he spent most of his time talking about someone else.

“Everyone knows how good he is,” Rogers said of Palmer. “Obviously, he had a difficult season with injuries and stuff last year, and you could see in his eyes in pre-season and training that he’s ready to prove people wrong. You saw that with that performance – the best player on the pitch by a mile and that’s what he does. It’s good to have him on our side.”

One game does not define a season. But on the opening day of Alonso’s tenure, Chelsea didn’t just win. They found a leader in Palmer, a front line with teeth, and a statement performance that poses a simple question: if this is what a “ready and hungry” Cole Palmer looks like in August, where might he drag this team by May?
