Chelsea Secure Marco Palestra with Big Contract
Chelsea have moved decisively to win the race for Marco Palestra, with the Italy international in London today to complete his medical ahead of a big-money switch from Atalanta.
The right-back flew into the capital yesterday, and his camp are now ironing out the final details of what is set to be a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge. Barring late drama, he will sign for Chelsea today.
Chelsea outmuscle Inter
Inter had pushed hard for Palestra, but Chelsea simply blew them away. The Premier League club doubled the salary the Nerazzurri had put on the table, jumping from a proposed €2.5m per season to a net €5m a year for the defender.
That wage will be tied to a six-year contract with an option for a seventh, a clear statement that Chelsea see the 21-year-old as a cornerstone of their next cycle rather than a short-term fix.
Big fee, bigger belief
The numbers underline that conviction. Reports in Italy suggest Atalanta will receive €57m plus €3m in add-ons, with the Bergamo club also securing a 10 per cent cut of any future sale. British transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has described the fee as “in excess of €50m,” while Sky Sport Italia have gone stronger on the €57m-plus-add-ons structure.
Either way, Atalanta are cashing in at elite-market levels for a full-back, and they have protected their upside if Chelsea’s gamble pays off and Palestra’s value soars again.
For Chelsea, this is another heavy investment in youth, another swing at reshaping a squad for the long haul. If Palestra grows into the player they believe he can be, today’s medical will mark one of the defining days of their rebuild.
