Chelsea Faces Midfield Challenges Ahead of Luton Tie
Chelsea will have to navigate their Carabao Cup second-round tie against Luton Town without two of their key midfield options, with Xabi Alonso confirming that Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are both ruled out.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Alonso drew a firm line under any hopes of a late return for the pair.
“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it [against Luton],” the Chelsea head coach said when asked about Caicedo and Palestra’s availability.
The duo also missed Chelsea’s Premier League opener, a frantic 3-2 win over Fulham, and their continued absence forces Alonso into another reshuffle in the middle of the pitch just as he looks to build early-season rhythm.
There is at least a hint of optimism around Caicedo’s short-term prospects. Alonso suggested the Ecuadorian could be back in contention for the weekend’s league fixture.
“Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend,” he said, while striking a more cautious note on Palestra. “We need to check a little bit more with Marco.”
The news softens slightly with confirmation that the rest of the squad that featured on Monday has come through unscathed. Cole Palmer, who took a knock but completed the match, is “absolutely fine” according to Alonso.
There was also a nod to opportunity. Young defender Penders is included in the squad for the Luton clash and could be handed minutes as Alonso manages workload and injuries in the early weeks of the campaign.
Chelsea arrive in the cup on the back of that breathless win over Fulham, but without Caicedo’s control or Palestra’s energy, the balance of Alonso’s midfield will be tested again. How quickly his options return could shape the tone of their season before it has truly settled.
