Chelsea Faces Luton Town in Carabao Cup Amid Injury Concerns

Chelsea’s season has barely started, but the juggling act has already begun.

Fresh from a breathless 3-2 win at Fulham to open their Premier League campaign, Alonso’s side now pivot to the Carabao Cup and a potentially awkward tie against Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night. The problem? Two of his key men are still stuck on the sidelines.

Caicedo and Palestra ruled out

Neither Moises Caicedo nor summer signing Palestra featured in the west London derby, and both have been ruled out again for the visit of Luton. It leaves Alonso with far less room to rotate than he would like in the first week of a long season.

Palestra, brought in from Atalanta in the recent window, faces an unclear return date. Caicedo is thought to be a little closer, but not close enough for this round.

Alonso explained after the win at Craven Cottage that both players had suffered minor setbacks in training, prompting a conservative approach.

“During the week they had a few setbacks,” he said in his pre-Luton press conference. “With Moi – and with any [player] – we don’t want to take too much risk. They weren’t ready to play tonight.”

The stance has not softened. Asked again about their status, Alonso was blunt about Thursday but left the door slightly ajar for the weekend.

“Not for tomorrow, both won’t make it,” he confirmed. “Let’s see, hopefully Moi could make it for the weekend, but we need to check a little bit more with Marco. Otherwise everyone from Monday is okay, Cole [Palmer] is absolutely fine.”

Goalkeeper question hangs over cup tie

The injuries are only part of the noise around Chelsea this week. Between the posts, the scrutiny has intensified.

First-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez came under fire for aspects of his display against Fulham, and that has fuelled talk of a late move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez before the transfer window shuts. In the meantime, it has opened the door for backup keeper Mike Penders to push for minutes.

Alonso, though, refused to give anything away on his Carabao Cup selection.

“Penders is part of the squad, so he has an opportunity,” he said. “We will decide and then I am giving the team tomorrow to the players, so I prefer to respect that they know first.”

A chance for rotation? A warning for Sanchez? Or simply early-season management? The answer will be obvious when the team sheet drops.

Enzo stays locked in amid transfer noise

While the goalkeeper debate rumbles on, one name looks nailed on to start: Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentine midfielder has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester City, but inside Cobham, Alonso insists there are no signs of distraction. Quite the opposite.

“Enzo, yes we expect him to be involved,” the Chelsea boss said. “He is training really well, he’s a good professional, and he will be involved.”

The message is clear. Until anything changes, Enzo remains central to Alonso’s plans and central to Chelsea’s midfield.

Long-term absentees still out

Beyond Caicedo and Palestra, Chelsea continue to manage their longer-term injuries. Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha both missed the opening-day win and will sit out again on Thursday. The expectation is that both could return to full training within the next two weeks, but for now they remain unavailable.

It leaves Alonso threading a fine line: strong enough to beat Luton and keep the early momentum rolling, cautious enough not to overload a squad already carrying knocks.

A win would push Chelsea into the next round of the Carabao Cup and reinforce the sense of a project starting to build under Alonso. The risk, if he gets the balance wrong, is that the price for progress in August could be paid deep into the winter.
