Chelsea Explores Loan Options for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea are actively working on a loan move for Mykhailo Mudryk as the winger tries to restart a career that has been on hold for 20 months.

The 25-year-old Ukraine international has not played a competitive game since November 2024, his progress halted by a four-year suspension after an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. That case has now been resolved by agreement, clearing the way for his return, but leaving a sizeable gap in his football life and a major question over what comes next.

Chelsea have eased him back in during pre-season, handing him substitute minutes against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim on their tour of Asia. Flickers of the old acceleration were there, but so was the rust you would expect after such a long absence. The club’s view is clear: he needs regular, meaningful football, not cameos.

The pressure to make a decision sharpened at the end of the tour. In meetings with the hierarchy, Mudryk agreed that a loan before the 1 September transfer deadline is the best route to rebuild his fitness and edge. It is not a departure in anger, but a pragmatic step in a career that has already taken some dramatic turns.

Strasbourg have been floated as a logical destination. They share the same BlueCo ownership as Chelsea, the pathway is obvious, and the French club can offer a relatively controlled environment. Yet Mudryk’s preference points elsewhere. He wants another crack at the Premier League, another chance to prove himself in the same division that greeted his £61m arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 with so much noise and expectation.

That stance has opened the door to a broader market. Several clubs are monitoring the situation, with interest not limited to England. A number of leading Italian sides have also emerged as potential options, sensing an opportunity to revive a high-ceiling talent whose career has stalled for reasons far beyond form or tactics.

Chelsea, for their part, are protected. Mudryk is tied to a long-term contract until 2031, one of the ultra-length deals that defined the early years of the club’s new regime. The question is not whether they are committed to him on paper, but where and how he can rediscover the explosive form that once made him one of Europe’s most coveted wide players.
