Celtic's Goalkeeper Search: Radek Vitek Ready to Shine
Celtic’s search for a new No.1 has moved sharply into focus – and Radek Vitek has just lit the green light himself.
The Manchester United goalkeeper has made it clear he is ready to walk away from Old Trafford this summer, ending a six-year spell without a single senior appearance for the club that signed him in 2020.
“I’m ready to go somewhere again and hopefully be number one,” Vitek told BBC Sport, a line that will have echoed loudly around Celtic Park.
Celtic’s keeper dilemma
Celtic’s need is obvious. Martin O’Neill has already gone public with it.
“We need another goalkeeper,” he said last week, stressing that the current depth chart – Ross Doohan and Viljami Sinisalo – is nowhere near enough for a club chasing titles and European nights.
“We’ve only got the two young lads, we’ve got Ross and we’ve got Sinisalo, so we definitely need another goalkeeper. You need competition for places as well.”
Sinisalo, O’Neill noted, handled “really trying circumstances” when asked to replace “the big fellow” last season and “did really fine.” But that was last season. A new campaign demands a new level of security.
O’Neill made it clear he is not shopping for a comfortable understudy.
“I don’t want an older goalkeeper who thinks, ‘Well, I’m just going to be number two.’ I want somebody to be threatening. It has to be. Even if it wasn’t an older goalkeeper, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be thinking of somebody younger.”
That profile reads like a description of Vitek.
Young. Hungry. And suddenly, available.
Vitek ready to move on
Vitek, 22, has been parked in the shadows at Manchester United, tied to a contract until 2028 but blocked from the first team. His development has played out away from the spotlight on a series of loans – Accrington Stanley, FC Blau-Weiss Linz, and most recently Bristol City.
He still hasn’t played a competitive minute for United’s senior side. What he has done is build a reputation elsewhere.
Last season at Bristol City, Vitek swept the board: Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. Three trophies, one message – he’s outgrown the role of understudy.
His stance is now crystal clear.
Asked if he preferred another loan or a permanent move, he replied: “I’m ready for both, to be fair. It depends on what the club wants and also on the options. There has been a few interests on the table. We’re hoping to choose the best one and hopefully it will happen soon.”
This is not a youngster hedging his bets. This is a goalkeeper pushing for a career.
He has been consistent about that ambition. As BBC Sport reported, Vitek’s main aim for next season has long been simple: play every week. His own words underline it: “My mind is the same. I want to play every week and that’s the goal for next season.”
The plan, according to the same report, had been for him to secure a move before Manchester United’s pre-season began. That didn’t materialise. Instead, he found himself in Helsinki at the weekend, part of the United side that lost 1-0 to Wrexham.
For a 22-year-old with three Bristol City awards on his mantelpiece, that’s not a stage – it’s a holding pattern.
Celtic’s interest grows
Celtic have been watching closely. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reported on July 11 that the Scottish champions are interested in Vitek after his impressive spell at Bristol City. The timing is no coincidence.
O’Neill’s comments about wanting a goalkeeper in the mould of Kasper Schmeichel or Joe Hart – experienced, authoritative, but still genuinely competitive – came just days after that report surfaced.
“That’s definitely a thought,” he said when asked about that type of signing.
The key, in his eyes, is mentality. No passengers. No comfortable back-ups. A goalkeeper who arrives to challenge, not to coast.
Vitek fits that brief, even if he comes without the big-name aura of Hart or Schmeichel. He brings something else: a point to prove and the peak years ahead of him.
For Celtic, the attraction is obvious. A 22-year-old, under contract at a Premier League giant, proven over a full Championship season, openly pushing for a No.1 role. The kind of profile that can anchor a position for years, not months.
Decision time
The next move now rests with Manchester United and the clubs circling around Vitek’s signature.
He is “ready for both” loan and permanent deals. United must decide whether to cash in, bank another loan fee, or keep a frustrated third or fourth choice on their books until 2028.
Celtic, for their part, cannot afford to drift. O’Neill has already laid out the stakes: competition for places, a proper battle for the gloves, and no room for complacency.
Vitek wants to play every week. Celtic need a goalkeeper who demands exactly that.
One side is searching for a solution. The other is desperate for a stage.
