A four-year wait ended under the Black Field lights as Carbery Rangers ripped into their McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC campaign and into their neighbours from Skibbereen.
Both sides came to Union Hall wounded, both beaten in the opening round, both knowing this derby carried more than local bragging rights. For ten minutes, it felt like a contest. After that, Ross took the game, the ball and the night.
Ross catch fire
Skibb actually settled first. By the 11th minute, they led 0-3 to 0-2, Dylan Hourihane Snr clipping a two-point score to nudge them in front and give their support a reason to believe.
The belief vanished almost instantly.
From the next attack, John Hodnett and Peadar O’Rourke sliced through, working an opening for Dylan O’Neill. His shot was half-smothered by goalkeeper Derek Tobin, Seán Fitzgerald tried to scramble it clear, but the ball had already crossed the line. Ross were up and running.
Skibb punched back once more. Colm O’Driscoll and Niall Daly stitched together a move, Hourihane Snr sent the ball in on top of David Shannon and, when the full-forward broke it, Dylan Hourihane Jnr pounced to lash to the net.
That made it 1-3 to 1-2 for O’Donovan Rossa on 13 minutes. It was also their last score of the half.
From there, Carbery Rangers simply took over. They reeled off the final 11 points of the opening period, playing into the breeze but playing as if it didn’t exist. John O’Rourke, dropping deep in the half-back line, dictated the tempo and the angles, his passing carving open a Skibb defence that had numbers back but no answers.
Inside, O’Neill and Darragh Hayes thrived on the quality of ball. Hayes clipped four first-half points from play, O’Neill added to his goal with a string of scores, and the movement of Mark Hodnett at centre-forward constantly dragged markers into the wrong places. Even when Peadar O’Rourke, excellent throughout, dragged a goal chance wide, Ross barely broke stride.
By half-time, the scoreboard told the story: Carbery Rangers 1-13, O’Donovan Rossa 1-3. Ten points clear. In control. And finally looking like a side ready to win in the group stages again.
No way back for Skibb
Any faint Skibb hopes of a second-half surge were quickly smothered. Straight from the restart, Patrick Hurley worked hard to turn over possession and slipped a neat pass to O’Neill, who did the rest. The lead stretched to 11.
O’Donovan Rossa, stuck in a 23-minute scoring drought, finally found some relief when Hourihane Snr knocked over a pair of frees. They needed a goal to really shake Ross, but the Rosscarbery defence refused to panic. P Óg Hill, J Kevane and C Daly were tight and aggressive on the full-back line, and the space Skibb craved never opened.
The pressure flipped again. Hayes, still buzzing around the inside line, teed up Mark Hodnett for a two-point score and then landed his own fifth point of the evening. The gap ballooned to 12 as the game moved towards the three-quarter mark. At that stage, it felt like a training exercise in game management for Ross.
There was still time for drama at either end. Hodnett almost capped his display with a late goal, his dipping shot forcing Tobin into a sharp clawed save under the crossbar. Skibb, to their credit, refused to fold completely. They finished with a late flurry, Hourihane Snr crashing a goal from a free to trim the margin and leave Ross with a small nagging worry about scoring difference when the group table is finally settled.
It didn’t change the outcome. It barely changed the tone. This was Ross’s night from the 13th minute on.
Standout performers and what comes next
The numbers underline it. O’Neill finished with 1-6, all from play. Hayes kicked 0-5, only one from a free. Mark Hodnett chipped in with 0-4, including a two-point score and a free, while John O’Rourke’s 0-3 barely captured his influence as a deep-lying playmaker. Patrick Hurley added two points, and captain Seamus Lenihan also got on the board.
For Skibb, Hourihane Snr carried the bulk of the scoring load with 1-5, including a goal and three frees plus a two-point effort. Hourihane Jnr’s first-half goal was the high point of their evening, with Eoin Connolly, Fitzgerald and Luke O’Sullivan adding a point apiece.
Ross, whose last group-stage win came against Éire Óg at premier senior level in 2022, finally have momentum again. They head into a pivotal clash with Newmarket with confidence restored and their attacking unit humming.
O’Donovan Rossa face a very different week. They must regroup quickly before meeting Cill na Martra, fully aware that another defeat could drag them into a second successive relegation play-off.
