Bruno Guimaraes Set for First Arsenal Start in Community Shield
Bruno Guimaraes is set for his first Arsenal start – and it could come on one of English football’s showpiece stages.
The Brazilian midfielder, used only off the bench in the Gunners’ final pre-season outing against Como in midweek, is pushing to go straight into Mikel Arteta’s XI for Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City in Cardiff. Pre-season minutes have been scarce, but his timing might be perfect.
Big guns back for Arsenal
Arsenal’s preparations receive a major lift with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi all back in the squad. None of the trio has played a single minute in pre-season after only returning to training at the start of the week, granted an extended break following the World Cup.
The workload has been sharp and intense at the training ground in recent days. The reward: all three are in line to be involved against City.
“They will be available,” Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference. “They trained with us today, they will train tomorrow. If they are in the condition we expect them to be, they will be involved.”
The message is clear: they are back, but Arsenal will not gamble. Their minutes are likely to be carefully managed, which opens the door for Guimaraes to anchor the midfield from the off.
Guimaraes to lead a reshaped midfield
With Arsenal expected to be cautious with Saka, Rice and Zubimendi, Guimaraes looks primed to start alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly, the youngster who has quietly become one of the constants of the summer by starting every pre-season game.
It points to a midfield blend of fresh legs and elite quality, with Martin Odegaard operating ahead of them and looking to knit Arsenal’s play in the final third.
Defensive absences shape the back line
At the back, Arteta’s hand is forced. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba remain unavailable, stripping Arsenal of two key defensive options and narrowing the manager’s choices.
Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera are therefore expected to start on the right side of defence, with Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori completing the back four in front of David Raya.
It is a back line that has not yet been truly stress-tested this summer. Manchester City will change that quickly.
Tzolis pushing Martinelli for a starting role
One of the standout stories of Arsenal’s pre-season has been Christos Tzolis. Bright, direct and relentless, he has been among the club’s most impressive performers over the summer and has built a compelling case to start at Wembley’s Welsh stand-in.
He is battling Gabriel Martinelli for that spot on the left. Martinelli, who continues to be linked with a move to Turkey, suddenly has genuine competition for his place. If Arteta rewards form, Tzolis may well get the nod.
On the opposite flank, Saka’s return gives Arsenal their usual threat on the right, even if his minutes are managed.
Havertz trusted for the big occasion
Up front, Kai Havertz remains Arteta’s go-to option when the stakes rise. The German has often been the manager’s preferred choice in Arsenal’s biggest games, and nothing about this occasion suggests a change.
With Havertz leading the line, Odegaard pulling strings, and Tzolis and Dowman offering support, Arsenal will look to press City high and strike early.
