Bruno Fernandes vs Erling Haaland: Gameweek 2 Captaincy Decision
Erling Haaland will almost certainly wear the armband for most Fantasy Premier League managers again in Gameweek 2. But the numbers are screaming one name in opposition.

The Manchester United playmaker, priced at £12.0m, has the fixture, the role and the Old Trafford record to stand as the clearest alternative to Haaland (£15.5m) this weekend.
Home king vs away destroyer
Fernandes faces promoted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday. It is exactly the kind of home match where he has feasted in recent seasons.
Last year, no player scored more points in home fixtures than the United captain. He delivered eight double-digit hauls at Old Trafford in 2025/26. Eight. That’s double Haaland’s tally of four away from home over the same campaign.
And it wasn’t just explosive returns. It was reliability.
Fernandes blanked in only three of his 17 home outings last season. Haaland, on the road, failed to return in seven of 18. That’s a huge swing in “safety” for the armband.
The 2025/26 split underlines it:

Gameweek 1 hurt both camps.
Haaland was captained by 4.38 million managers, Fernandes by 1.48 million. Their ownership was enormous: 67.9% for Haaland, 48.5% for Fernandes. Both returned just two points.
No goals. No assists. No bonus. Just a collective groan from more than half the game.
That blank, though, only sharpens the decision now. Stick with the template, or lean into the data?
Haaland goes to Crystal Palace in Friday’s opening fixture of Gameweek 2. He was the top-scoring player in away matches across 2025/26, so the ceiling is obvious. But if you’re looking for a spot where the odds tilt, Fernandes at home to Ipswich is exactly that.
The chasing pack: Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro
While the premium pair stalled, three midfielders hit the ground sprinting.
Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all produced double-figure hauls in Gameweek 1 and have strong fixtures again.
Odegaard operated in Arsenal’s most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz in the opener, scored, and walked away with 11 points against Coventry City. He now travels to an Aston Villa side still reeling from a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Palmer and Joao Pedro did their damage together. A goal and an assist each away to Fulham in Chelsea’s first match of 2026/27 underlined their attacking influence. Now they return to Stamford Bridge to face Brighton, another home fixture that suits their creative, aggressive styles.
They’re not just form picks. They’re viable captaincy shouts if you want to step away from the Haaland–Fernandes axis altogether.
So, who gets the armband?
Strip away the noise, and the call is clear.
Fernandes’ Old Trafford record, combined with a home date against newly promoted Ipswich, makes him the standout alternative to Haaland and, on pure numbers, the stronger captaincy pick for Gameweek 2.
Haaland will still dominate the captaincy percentages. He always does. But if you’re willing to back the data over the crowd, the United captain is the one to challenge him.
Behind them, Odegaard and Palmer sit next in line. Both are in form, both have attractive fixtures, with Odegaard’s role and Villa’s fragility just giving the Arsenal man the edge for third place in the captaincy rankings.
