Brighton Stalemate in Tromso as Rangers Secure Narrow Win
Three hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, under a pale Norwegian sky, Brighton’s second European adventure froze in its tracks.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side dominated the ball against Tromso in their UEFA Conference League play-off first leg, but left with only a 0-0 draw and a nagging sense of opportunity missed.
Brighton frozen out in Tromso
The Seagulls controlled long stretches of the game, moved the ball with authority and created the clearest chances. Tromso goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard simply refused to budge.
Twice in the first half he stood between Brighton and a valuable away goal. Georginio Rutter broke through and struck firmly, only for Haugaard to spring into action and push the effort away. Brighton’s pressure grew. The rhythm was familiar: patient passing, probing runs, full-backs high, midfielders rotating. The finish was not. Each promising move died in the final third, each half-chance just shy of conviction.
Tromso, hemmed in for long periods, waited for their moments and almost stole the narrative. Heine Larsen burst clear on a counter-attack, only to be denied by Bart Verbruggen, the Brighton goalkeeper standing tall in a one-on-one that carried far more weight than the flow of the game suggested.
As the clock ticked towards full-time, the hosts carved out the chance of the night. Isak Vadebu found himself with a golden opportunity in the closing minutes, the kind of moment that can tilt a tie. He squandered it, and Brighton escaped with their clean sheet intact.
Debut in the deep freeze, absences in the spotlight
There was at least one landmark for Brighton. Hurzeler handed a debut to defender Luka Vuskovic, the club-record signing from Tottenham, throwing the highly rated centre-back straight into the unforgiving cold of European knockout football.
He slotted into a side missing two significant names. Carlos Baleba and Yankuba Minteh were both absent through injury, their situations watched closely not only on the south coast but in Manchester and Merseyside. Baleba has been linked with Manchester United, Minteh with Liverpool, and their absence removed two potential difference-makers from Hurzeler’s options on a night that cried out for a decisive touch.
The tie now heads back to England. Brighton, playing in Europe for only the second time in their history after last season’s run to the Europa League last 16, will host Tromso next Thursday knowing they must finish the job at home.
Before that, the Premier League looms. Aston Villa visit on Sunday, and Hurzeler must balance the demands of a domestic opener with the reality that their European fate hangs on ninety minutes back at the Amex.
Rangers grind out narrow win as Scots endure mixed night
While Brighton were left frustrated in the Arctic, Rangers found a way through in Glasgow, though not without drama.
Derek McInnes’ side scraped a 1-0 victory over Czech visitors Jablonec, a tight, edgy contest decided early in the second half. Ryan Naderi delivered the crucial moment, finishing the only goal of the game and briefly settling home nerves.
Rangers could not relax. Cammy Devlin’s dismissal left them to close out the tie with 10 men, turning the final stages into a test of resilience rather than fluency. They held on, and on a night when margins mattered, that was enough.
Across Scotland, the picture was far less tidy. Of the three Scottish clubs in Conference League action, Rangers were the only ones to win. Hearts were twice pegged back in a 2-2 draw at home to Rapid Vienna, their advantage slipping away in a match that swung back and forth. Motherwell suffered the toughest assignment, beaten 3-1 by last season’s Europa League runners-up Freiburg.
For Brighton, the question is simple and unforgiving: can they turn control into goals when Tromso arrive on the south coast, or will a long, cold night in Norway come back to haunt them?
