Brian Fariñas: Barcelona's Midfield Wildcard Amid De Jong's Injury

Brian Fariñas has forced his way into the conversation at Barcelona. What happens next, though, is out of his hands.

The 20-year-old midfielder has been one of the revelations of Hansi Flick’s first pre-season in charge. So much so that the new coach personally blocked a loan move to Girona before a ball had even been kicked, determined to judge the youngster up close.

Fariñas did not waste the chance. He impressed the coaching staff, showed personality in training and games, and has gone from a name on the squad list to a genuine option for the first team. Flick trusts him. That much is clear.

But trust does not guarantee minutes. And in Fariñas’ case, his immediate future is now tied to a very different storyline: Frenkie de Jong’s knee.

Flick finds a wildcard in midfield

The original plan was simple. Barcelona and Girona had an agreement in place for Fariñas to spend the season on loan in Montilivi, a logical step for a young midfielder looking for regular top-flight football.

Flick intervened.

He wanted to see whether the academy product could handle his demands, his structure, his intensity. Once pre-season began, Fariñas answered every question. He showed he could sit as a defensive midfielder, link play as an interior, and push higher between the lines when needed.

The German coach even threw him in at right-back against Birmingham. It was a test of temperament as much as talent. Fariñas coped, and that versatility has quickly become one of his biggest selling points.

He has moved from being “one for the future” to a player who has genuinely convinced the manager he can contribute now. Training sessions are no longer just an audition; they are a battle to stay in Flick’s plans.

The club has already made one firm decision: Fariñas will not drop back to the reserve team. That door is closed. From here, it’s either a place in Flick’s senior squad or the Girona move that was all but signed off.

And that is where De Jong comes in.

De Jong’s knee holds the key

Barcelona’s next step with Fariñas hinges on the recovery of Frenkie de Jong, who is working his way back from a rupture of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, suffered during the World Cup.

The Dutchman has opted for conservative treatment. No operation for now, but surgery remains on the table if his progress stalls. Barcelona are watching the situation closely, waiting for clearer medical updates before committing to any big squad calls.

That uncertainty spills directly into Fariñas’ case.

If De Jong is sidelined for longer than hoped, the logic is obvious: keeping Fariñas in the first-team group makes far more sense, especially with the club already ruling out a return to the reserves. Flick would need bodies in midfield, and he already knows the youngster can cover multiple roles.

If De Jong recovers on schedule and the midfield picture stabilises, the equation changes. Fariñas’ path to consistent minutes at Camp Nou narrows, and the Girona loan – already agreed in principle – suddenly looks like the best route for his development.

So the midfielder finds himself in a strange limbo. He has done everything right: impressed the new coach, shown tactical flexibility, and earned the trust of the staff. Yet his fate will not be decided by his own performances or even by Girona’s willingness to bet on him.

It will be decided by how quickly one of Barcelona’s most important players can trust his right knee again – and by how bold Flick wants to be with a youngster who has already disrupted the script once this summer.
