Brazil Begins 2026 World Cup Journey with Neymar's Injury Concerns

Brazil’s road to the 2026 World Cup starts this Wednesday in Teresópolis, but all eyes are fixed on one calf muscle in particular.

Neymar, the team’s undisputed star and emotional barometer, arrives at Granja Comary under a cloud of doubt after injuring his right calf on the 17th. Since then, he has not kicked a ball in anger, restricted to physiotherapy sessions at Santos’ facilities and absent from Peixe’s Copa Sudamericana win over Deportivo Cuenca at Vila Belmiro on Tuesday.

On paper, it sounds minor. Santos’ hierarchy has publicly described the problem as a mild edema. Inside the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the tone is very different.

According to O Globo, there is a clear disagreement between club and federation over how long Neymar will actually need to recover. Santos doctor Rodrigo Zogaib went as far as to state last week that the forward would report to Teresópolis fit and ready. The CBF, the newspaper notes, does not back that optimism.

The concern is simple: this may not be a simple knock dressed up as a scare. O Globo reports that internal CBF estimates point to a possible recovery window of three to four weeks, a scenario that would cast a shadow over the early stages of Brazil’s preparation, even if it does not currently threaten his presence at the World Cup itself. There is, for now, no talk of the No. 10 being ruled out of the tournament.

So the federation waits.

To cut through the conflicting versions, the national team staff has scheduled a battery of physical and clinical tests for all players throughout Wednesday at Granja Comary, with Neymar’s results the most anticipated of all. Until those exams are completed, the medical department can do little more than monitor the case from a distance, study the reports, and brace for what the scans might reveal.

Only then will Brazil know if the start of their 2026 journey features their leading man at full stride, or if the campaign opens with a limp.
