Benfica Secures Duran on Big-Money Loan Deal

Benfica have rolled the dice on one of football’s most intriguing young forwards, sealing a season-long loan for Duran from Al-Nassr for the 2026-27 campaign in a deal that underlines just how much they believe in him.

The numbers are not those of a routine gamble. The Portuguese giants will pay €6.1 million for a single season of the Colombian, with an option to make the move permanent for €30m next summer. That is the profile of a striker they expect to shape games, not simply fill out the squad.

“Biggest club in Portugal”

Duran arrived speaking like a man who knows the size of the shirt he has just pulled on.

“I’m very grateful to God, just as I said when I arrived,” he said. “I’m happy! I still say that it’s the biggest club in Portugal. I’m very grateful to be here. I have very high expectations for my time here. I want to play well, give it my all, and become a champion.”

There was no talk of adaptation periods or easing himself in. He wants impact, and he wants it now.

“I want to work hard and help my team,” he added, a simple line that fits the way Benfica like their forwards to play: aggressive, relentless, always on the move.

A rapid, global rise

At 22, Duran already carries a career that has moved at fast-forward speed.

He first broke through at Envigado, the Colombian club that has long served as a conveyor belt of attacking talent. From there came Chicago Fire, where his blend of power and movement lit up MLS and drew European scouts in numbers.

Aston Villa made their move in January 2023, taking him to the Premier League and onto a much bigger stage. It was there that his name began to travel, his potential obvious even in flashes.

Al-Nassr then pushed all-in with a €77m deal, a statement signing in a league determined to make headlines. Duran’s path, though, did not settle in Saudi Arabia. Loan spells at Fenerbahce and Zenit followed, each stop adding experience, minutes, and a different kind of pressure.

Now he circles back to Europe’s mainstream, this time with Benfica offering both the platform and the expectation.

International edge

Duran does not arrive as a raw project. He already has 17 caps and three goals for Colombia, experience that hardens a player quickly. International football demands resilience. It also teaches forwards how to live off scraps, how to decide matches with a single touch.

Benfica will want that version of him: the ruthless one, the striker who needs only a moment.

The structure of the deal says plenty. €6.1m for a loan, €30m to buy. If this works, Benfica gain a line-leading striker in his early 20s with resale value and star power. If it explodes, they have a player who can define a season at Estádio da Luz and then move on for a premium.
