Ben Godfrey Signs for Rangers: A New Chapter in His Career
Ben Godfrey’s career takes another intriguing turn this summer, as the England international defender signs for Rangers ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with the club holding an option to make the move permanent next year.
It is a significant capture. At 28, Godfrey arrives with the kind of mileage and scars that clubs at this level usually have to overpay for: more than 100 Premier League appearances, experience in Serie A with Atalanta, and a grounding in the unforgiving world of English promotion battles.
His story began far from this stage. A York City academy product, Godfrey broke through at his hometown club before Norwich City moved to bring him into their system. That decision paid off handsomely. By the 2018/19 season he had forced his way into the Canaries’ first team, becoming a central figure in their charge to promotion to the Premier League.
That campaign showcased the attributes that have followed him throughout his career: aggression in the duel, the athleticism to defend big spaces, and the composure to play from the back. Those qualities drew Everton’s attention, and in the summer of 2020 he made the jump to Goodison Park, announcing himself with a debut in the white heat of a Merseyside derby that finished 2-2.
The years that followed in England’s top flight hardened him. Regular battles with elite forwards, the weekly scrutiny, the constant demand to adapt – all of it has shaped the defender now walking into Ibrox. From there, Godfrey took on a new challenge in 2024, swapping the Premier League for Serie A with Atalanta, before heading north again for a loan spell in Denmark with Brøndby for the second half of last season.
Now comes Rangers.
“I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here,” Godfrey said after sealing the move. “I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started. I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”
The message is clear: he has not come to make up the numbers.
Manager Derek McInnes, who has pushed to bring him in, knows exactly what he is getting. “Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him,” McInnes said. “He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”
For Rangers, it is a statement about where they want to go and how quickly they want to get there. For Godfrey, it is a chance to turn that experience into trophies.
