Barcelona's Roony Bardghji Suffers Second ACL Tear
The call from the medical team at Barcelona on Tuesday confirmed what everyone at the training ground had feared. Roony Bardghji has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Again.
For the 20-year-old Sweden international, it is a brutal twist at the worst possible moment. He was not just fighting for minutes. He was preparing for a way out.
From transfer talks to operating table
The injury struck on Monday during a training session, just as Bardghji was edging towards a move away before the summer window shuts on September 1. Scans have now confirmed the severity of the damage and the need for surgery in the coming days. Months of rehabilitation await.
This was supposed to be the decisive summer in his young career. After conversations with Barcelona’s hierarchy, the winger had been actively exploring options across Europe. Premier League clubs had made contact. Negotiations were expected to accelerate in the final weeks of the window.
Instead, everything stops here. The injury has killed any chance of a transfer. Bardghji will remain in Barcelona, not as a new signing elsewhere, but as a long-term absentee.
Flick’s honesty, football’s cruelty
The timing could hardly be harsher. Just days before the injury, coach Hansi Flick had sat down with Bardghji and delivered a clear, if painful, message: first-team minutes at Barça would be extremely hard to come by this season, according to ESPN.
The conversation was blunt but intended to help. With Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi arriving this summer, the path to regular football narrowed even further for a player who had already spent most of last season coming off the bench.
Barcelona tried to manage the risk. Bardghji was deliberately left out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese to avoid injury while transfer talks simmered in the background. The danger they tried to dodge in a match found him in training instead.
One wrong movement on Monday, and the plan for his future disintegrated.
A painful repeat
This is not a new nightmare for Bardghji. It is a rerun.
The winger has now torn the ACL in his right knee for the second time. The first came in 2024, during his time at Copenhagen, where his rise had made him one of the most talked-about young attackers in Scandinavia. Barcelona moved for him last summer, paying around €2 million to bring him to Spain.
His debut season in La Liga brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals. The numbers tell a story of a player trusted enough to be involved but rarely to start. Cameos, flashes, a sense of promise rather than a nailed-on role.
This season was supposed to be different, just not at Barcelona. The club’s message was clear: find a new home, find regular football, build a career. Instead, he faces another long spell with the physios, the gym, and the lonely repetition of rehab work.
Future on hold
With the window closing on September 1, there is no realistic route to a move now. No club will take on a player who needs surgery and months of recovery before he can even think about training again. The market that had started to form around him vanishes overnight.
Barcelona have confirmed he will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a lengthy rehabilitation process at the club. The 2024–25 campaign, which was meant to be a launchpad away from Catalonia, will now be spent trying to rebuild the same knee that has already betrayed him once.
At 20, Bardghji still has time. But two major ACL tears in the same knee before most players hit their physical peak is a heavy burden to carry. The question now is no longer which club he will join next.
It is how he comes back from this – and whether the career he imagined can still be reached from a treatment room in Barcelona.
