Barcelona are closing in on Karim Adeyemi, and this time it feels like more than just another rumour swirling around the Camp Nou offices.
After their opening bid of around €20 million was rejected by Borussia Dortmund, Barça went back to the table. Hard. Negotiations have now produced a near-final agreement: an initial €22m fee, with a further €7m tied to achievable add-ons. Dortmund have also secured a percentage of any future profit, a nod to both Adeyemi’s potential and the German club’s knack for selling at the right moment.
For Barcelona, this is another deliberate piece in a rapidly changing attacking puzzle.
Flick’s new frontline takes shape
Adeyemi is set to become the Spanish champions’ second signing of the summer, following the €70m capture of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Two wide forwards, two very different profiles, one clear message: Hansi Flick is reshaping this attack in his own image.
The German coach knows exactly what he is buying. He handed Adeyemi his senior Germany debut during his spell in charge of the national team and has now requested him again as part of an attacking overhaul first flagged internally in March. Pace, pressing, direct running in behind – this is the template Flick wants on the flanks.
Just as important is what this deal does not mean. Club sources insist the moves for Adeyemi and Gordon are separate from Barça’s pursuit of a new No. 9. The hunt for Julián Álvarez continues, with the Atlético Madrid forward viewed as the long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who has already departed for Chicago Fire FC on a free transfer.
The message: this is not either/or. Barcelona are trying to build an entire frontline, not just plug a gap.
Big exits, bigger demands
The scale of the rebuild explains the urgency. Lewandowski is gone. Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United after his loan spell. Ferran Torres is running into the final year of his contract, his future uncertain, and Roony Bardghji could also move on.
Those exits strip away experience and goals. They also clear space – tactically and financially – for a younger, faster, more flexible forward line.
Gordon is already through the door. Adeyemi is expected to follow in the coming days. The club then intend to keep pushing for Álvarez. If all three deals land, Flick will have a front unit built around mobility and rotation, rather than one fixed reference point.
For now, the core attacking options feature Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Torres. Add Gordon’s direct dribbling, Adeyemi’s explosive speed and, potentially, Álvarez’s movement in the box, and the picture changes quickly. Defenders won’t be facing the same Barcelona they prepared for last season.
Adeyemi’s profile: speed, flexibility, goals
Adeyemi brings something Barça have often lacked in recent years: genuine versatility across the front three. He can operate off either wing or through the middle, stretch defences with runs in behind, and press aggressively from the front – all traits that fit Flick’s high-energy blueprint.
He arrives with a solid body of work behind him. After emerging at Red Bull Salzburg, Adeyemi joined Dortmund in 2022 and has since made 146 appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring 36 goals. Last season he hit 10 goals in 39 outings across all competitions, numbers that hint at room for growth rather than a finished product.
Dortmund’s insistence on a sell-on clause underlines that belief. They are cashing in now, but not closing the door on future profit if Adeyemi explodes at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona, for their part, are betting that under a coach who already understands him, in a system tailored to his strengths, those numbers will rise.
The deal is not done until the signatures are on the contract and the medical is passed. But with the fee agreed in principle and the framework in place, Adeyemi is on the brink of trading the Yellow Wall for the Camp Nou.
If Flick gets the striker he wants next, this won’t just be a refresh of Barcelona’s attack. It will be a complete reset.
