Alongside him, 19-year-old left-back Jofre Torrents is expected to be announced as a new Ajax player, in a move that underlines how aggressively European clubs are now circling La Masia’s next generation. Barcelona will retain a buy-back option, a clear sign they are not ready to close the door on his future in Blaugrana colours.

The deal for Jofre was supposed to be wrapped up on Sunday. Timelines slipped. Ajax were busy with their first match of the season, and the formal announcement was pushed back to today. The agreement, though, is in place.

Michel Sanchez has made it clear he wants the young full-back, who did not travel with Barcelona to Udine on Saturday as his future hung in the balance. While his team prepared on the pitch, Jofre waited for clarity on his next step.
