Barcelona Closes Door on Bergvall as Midfield Focus Shifts to Rodri

Two years ago, Lucas Bergvall walked through the doors of Barcelona’s training ground, toured the facilities, met Deco and left convinced he stood on the brink of a dream move. Now his name is back on the table at Barça – but this time, the door is firmly shut.

The Swedish midfielder, struggling to find his place at Tottenham Hotspur, has been put back on the market by his representatives. They have sounded out several of Europe’s heavyweight clubs in search of an exit from north London, and Barcelona’s number was dialled again. The package being floated now is around £60 million, a figure that underlines how far Bergvall’s valuation has climbed since his Djurgardens days.

It has not moved Barcelona an inch.

Deco draws a line under an old file

Inside the sporting department, the response has been blunt. Deco has no intention of reopening what is seen as a closed case. The “Bergvall file”, as it was known in the corridors of power at the club, has been archived.

Barcelona believe they turned that page long ago. Their midfield planning has shifted towards a different profile entirely, one they consider essential if they are to rebuild a dominant spine.

At the top of that list sits one name: Rodri.

The Manchester City midfielder is viewed as the ideal signing to raise the level of the team’s control, leadership and competitive edge in the centre of the pitch. Every strategic conversation about the midfield keeps circling back to him. Every euro is being mentally reserved for that kind of operation, not for a second attempt at a player they once let go.

The transfer that slipped away

Bergvall’s story with Barcelona is one of those “almost” deals that tend to linger in a club’s memory.

In 2024, when he was still at Djurgardens, Barça had an agreement on the table: around €7 million fixed, plus another €3 million in add-ons. The club rolled out the red carpet. The youngster flew in, visited the training ground, spoke with Deco, and could almost picture himself in blaugrana.

Then Tottenham arrived with heavier artillery.

Spurs raised their offer to the Swedish club and significantly improved the player’s personal terms. Barcelona, already walking a financial tightrope, refused to be dragged into a bidding war. They stepped back and let Tottenham close the deal.

Xavi Hernandez, then on the bench at Camp Nou, summed it up with a dose of realism: one club had offered more, and Barcelona decided not to go higher. That, he said at the time, is how the market works.

Bergvall himself later admitted the choice had not been simple. Turning down Barcelona had been one of the toughest calls of his young career. He spoke of a 50-50 decision, of two “incredible clubs”, and of eventually feeling that Tottenham was the right next step, even if saying no to Barça hurt.

No second act

Now, with the player looking for a way out of a complicated spell in England, his entourage has come back to a familiar door. This time, the conversation has been short.

Barcelona appreciate the offer, but they are not interested in rewinding the story. From the club’s perspective, that chapter is finished. The financial scale of a £60 million move only hardens that stance.

All roads in their planning lead elsewhere. The energy, the budget projections, the strategic focus – it is all aimed at trying to prise Rodri away from Manchester City, a task as ambitious as it is defining.

Bergvall once stood on the brink of a Barça future that never arrived. Now, as his career seeks a new direction, he will have to find it far from the Camp Nou and far from a club that has already chosen a very different midfield cornerstone.
