Aurelien Tchouameni Faces Uncertain Future at Real Madrid

Aurelien Tchouameni walked into Real Madrid as the future of their midfield. Two years on, he may be walking out as the sacrifice that funds Jose Mourinho’s rebuild.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been alerted to a significant shift at the Bernabeu, with the France international told there are no guarantees over his long-term role under Mourinho. Lines of communication between the player’s camp and both Premier League clubs have stayed open all summer; now they suddenly feel live rather than speculative.

Mourinho’s rebuild squeezes out a star

Mourinho has wasted no time putting his stamp on Madrid. The defensive line has been reinforced with Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City to refresh the midfield. And Madrid are still shopping.

  • Enzo Fernandez remains a priority target.
  • Rodri is admired inside the club.
  • West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being watched closely.
  • There is also talk of another push for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, with the club prepared to commit huge sums to keep the squad at European football’s summit.

Something has to give.

Inside Madrid, the message to Tchouameni has changed. Once ring-fenced as untouchable, he has now been told his place in Mourinho’s plans is no longer assured. Eduardo Camavinga is in a similar position: valued, but vulnerable if more midfielders arrive.

That is a sharp turn from earlier this year, when Madrid dismissed the idea of a sale even after Tchouameni’s well-publicised training-ground altercation with Federico Valverde. Then, he was still described as central to their future. Under Mourinho, “central” has become “conditional”.

Liverpool and United smell opportunity

In England, the reaction has been swift. Liverpool and Manchester United have both been fully briefed on the changing picture in Madrid and are ready to move if the door opens.

Liverpool’s admiration is long-standing. They pushed hard to sign Tchouameni from Monaco in 2022, only to lose out to Madrid, and have monitored him ever since. With doubts over the long-term futures of several midfielders and the club looking beyond domestic options like Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, Tchouameni is viewed at Anfield as a plug-and-play solution: a player who walks into their midfield and raises the level immediately.

Manchester United see the same thing from a different angle. At Old Trafford, Tchouameni is regarded as one of the elite midfielders in the game, someone capable of transforming the balance and quality of their entire unit. United’s hierarchy have tracked him for years; this is the profile they rarely see available at anything short of a premium.

Arsenal and Chelsea are keeping a watching brief, but for now Liverpool and United are considered best placed if Madrid formally decide to cash in.

The price of a rebuild

Madrid know what they have. They also know what they need.

To fund Mourinho’s overhaul, significant sales will be required, and internally Tchouameni is seen as one of the few assets who can command a major fee without tearing out the core of the team’s identity. He has two years left on his contract, his stock remains high, and the club believes this is the moment to test the market.

The figure being discussed in Spain is around €100m (£87m, $115m). Push much beyond that and Madrid risk scaring off even the richest suitors at a time when clubs are more wary than ever of inflated fees.

Both Liverpool and United have already shown their reluctance to be dragged into spiralling valuations. United have walked away from Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson over price. Liverpool have repeatedly refused to overpay for domestic targets.

Tchouameni, though, sits in a different category. His pedigree with Monaco, Real Madrid and France, his experience at the top level, and his profile as a modern holding midfielder make that nine-figure bracket easier to justify than many of the numbers currently being floated elsewhere.

A pivotal few weeks

Madrid believe the market will bear that valuation. Liverpool and United believe the player is worth reshaping a midfield around. Tchouameni, now aware that his status in Madrid is no longer guaranteed, stands at the centre of one of the summer’s defining transfer sagas.

As Mourinho’s rebuild gathers pace and new faces close in on the Bernabeu dressing room, the question is no longer whether Real Madrid will listen to offers.

It is which English giant will move first to test their resolve.
