Atlético Madrid Responds to Barcelona in Julián Álvarez Dispute
Atlético Madrid dropped the memes first. The message behind them, though, was anything but playful.
On a day when speculation intensified around Barcelona’s interest in Julián Álvarez, Atlético’s official X account launched a flurry of pointed posts, mockingly “announcing” moves for Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha and even Deco. The sequence ended with a surreal video featuring a dog in a lion’s wig – a jab wrapped in absurdity, but a jab all the same.
It looked like banter. Inside the club, it is being framed as a warning shot.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, an Atlético source laid bare the frustration simmering in the Spanish capital.
“It might seem like a joke or a bit humorous, but this is very serious. We’ve been very angry with FC Barcelona for some time now. It was done ironically, to hold a mirror up to the Catalan club and show them what they’re doing,” the source explained.
The complaint runs deeper than one transfer rumor. Atlético feel the entire atmosphere around the Álvarez saga has been stage-managed to unsettle their player.
“The messages from Fabrizio Romano, those from the press that covers the team—like when Cerezo goes to Barcelona for lunch and they bombard him with impertinent questions about whether he’s going to negotiate with Laporta for Julián—the way they treat our players in the mixed zone…”
The source then painted a picture of a club that believes it is being used as a prop in a public negotiation.
“They organize a dinner in Barcelona and alert El Chiringuito so they can film it, so Juanma López (a player agent and supposed mediator in this matter) is seen leaving the restaurant.”
From Atlético’s side, the accusation is clear: Barcelona and those around the operation are creating a sense of inevitability about a move that, in Madrid, they insist does not exist.
“They leak an offer that we claim has been sent, but nothing has arrived here,” the source added, before drawing a line in the sand. “It’s over. We’re very angry and this was our way of showing it.”
The social media campaign, then, was not random. It was a calculated, very public refusal to play along.
And when it comes to Álvarez himself, Atlético’s stance could not be more uncompromising. The club has once again underlined that they have no intention of selling and, if anyone wants to test that resolve, the price is designed to scare off even Europe’s biggest spenders.
“Julián can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments over several seasons with some variables. It’s a €500 million cash payment that needs to be deposited at LaLiga headquarters.”
No room for interpretation there. No payment plans. No creative structures. Just a figure that screams: don’t bother.
What began as whispers around a potential marquee signing for Barcelona has now morphed into an open conflict between two of Spain’s biggest clubs, played out in boardrooms, mixed zones and, very deliberately, on social media timelines.
The memes landed first. The message has followed. This saga hasn’t just heated up. It has turned ugly, and neither side looks ready to back down.
