Aston Villa Sign Joao Gomes for £38m: A New Midfield Ambition

Aston Villa have underlined their new-found ambition again, sealing the £38m signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves and dropping another heavy marker on the Premier League midfield market.

The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m tied to add-ons, prising one of Wolves’ few bright spots from a side that sank to the bottom of the table last season. He made 41 appearances in that campaign, 130 in total for the club since joining from Flamengo in 2023, scoring seven times and steadily growing into a central figure at Molineux.

For Villa, this is not an isolated splash. It’s part of a full-scale rebuild in the middle of the pitch.

On Friday they pushed through a club-record deal worth more than £50m for Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to the signature of the Switzerland international. Two major midfield arrivals in the space of days, both in their mid‑20s, both with the kind of energy and edge that reshape a dressing room.

The chase for Gomes was competitive. Atletico Madrid circled, but Villa moved decisively. The 25-year-old left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday, headed for medical tests and the final paperwork at Villa Park, and the deal quickly fell into place.

There is a clear reason for the urgency.

Amadou Onana, a key piece of Villa’s midfield structure, is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup. Morgan Rogers, another option in those central areas, is poised to depart, with Villa having agreed a £117m deal with Chelsea. Two major exits from the engine room, one enforced, one strategic.

So Villa have responded with power. Manzambi as the record signing, Gomes as the snarling, industrious presence alongside him. One eye on replacing what has been lost, the other on pushing the ceiling higher.

Wolves, by contrast, lose a player who carried a heavy load in a grim season. Gomes’ 41 outings came in a campaign that ended with them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, his combative performances one of the few constants in a side that never found its rhythm.

Villa believe those same qualities can drive them in the opposite direction.

Two big midfielders in, one star injured, another on his way out, and a squad being reshaped at speed. The question now is not whether Aston Villa are serious in this window.

It’s how far this new-look midfield can take them when the real games start.
