Guimaraes a major doubt for opener
Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal’s headline summer signing, is a serious doubt for Friday night’s Premier League curtain-raiser against Coventry after picking up a knock in the Community Shield.
The Brazilian midfielder started in the 3-0 win over Manchester City last Sunday, a debut that felt like a statement. It didn’t last. A knock forced him off and, five days on, his manager still can’t guarantee he will be ready.
Asked for an update in his pre-match press conference, Arteta kept his cards close.
“Let’s see how he is. He’s evolving really well, but let’s see for tomorrow,” the Spaniard said, refusing to push his new lynchpin before he is ready.
For a fanbase eager to see their new midfield built around Guimaraes, it is an early twist they didn’t want.
Saka and Rice back to lift the mood
The cloud over Guimaraes is at least partially lifted by the sight of two familiar faces walking back into the dressing room.
Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, both given extended breaks after England’s deep run at the 2026 World Cup, are available again. Their return comes after a summer in which they went from national workhorses to tournament mainstays, on the back of a domestic season that ended Arsenal’s 20-plus-year wait for the Premier League title.
Arteta did not hesitate when asked if they were ready.
“Yes, they’re ready to be involved, yes,” he said.
Those seven words will settle nerves. With Guimaraes touch-and-go, the presence of Rice and Saka restores some balance to the engine room and the attacking structure that powered last season’s surge.
Defensive injuries bite hard
The same sense of reassurance does not extend to the back line.
Jurrien Timber remains out with the groin injury he suffered just before the World Cup. William Saliba is already on the long-term absentee list. Two key defenders, both missing, and a title defence to mount.
Arteta’s update on Timber underlined the scale of the problem.
“No, I said in the next few weeks. He’s not training with the group yet,” he confirmed.
Arsenal finished last season with one of the most stable defensive units in the league. That security has been stripped away before a ball is kicked in the new campaign.
Konsa deal close as Arsenal push in market
The situation has forced Arsenal back into the market.
The club have agreed a £51m deal with Aston Villa for Ezri Konsa to reinforce their options at the back. The England defender would arrive as an immediate solution to a very obvious gap.
Arteta, as ever, refused to name names. But he did not hide the urgency.
“Well, we are really active in the market. I think I mentioned that a few days ago,” he said. “The ambition is to improve the squad.
“We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender; that’s clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we’re ready, we’ll announce something.”
The message is blunt: Arsenal know exactly where they are short, and they know they cannot wait.
On Friday night, Coventry will test how well Arteta can improvise. Over the next 10 days, the transfer window will reveal how quickly Arsenal can rebuild the platform that carried them to the title.
