Arsenal Targets Kounde as Barcelona Faces Financial Pressure

Arsenal have moved Jules Kounde to the top of their defensive wishlist, sensing an opening in Barcelona’s increasingly ruthless summer reshuffle.

The London club are tracking the Frenchman closely in the final stretch of the transfer window, aware that the Catalans’ need to balance the books could yet force a high-profile sale from a defence that once looked ring-fenced.

Barcelona open the door

Barcelona’s financial reality is biting again. Ronald Araujo has already gone, Marc Casado is on the verge of a €40 million exit, and the message from the boardroom is clear: nobody is truly safe if a big enough offer lands.

Kounde has reported for pre-season and is training as normal, but the ground is moving under his feet. His contract runs to 2030, yet his status inside the club has shifted sharply since Hansi Flick walked through the door.

Under the new coach, Kounde is no longer one of the “untouchables.” Flick is planning to start Eric Garcia on the right side of the defence, a decision that cuts straight into the Frenchman’s playing time and influence. Arteta’s perfect hybrid

On the other side of Europe, Mikel Arteta is staring at a growing problem.

William Saliba, the cornerstone of Arsenal’s defence, is out with an indefinite back injury on the eve of the new campaign. Jurrien Timber, signed to add versatility and composure, remains hampered by a chronic groin issue that restricts his minutes and his rhythm.

That internal competition leaves Kounde squeezed. He is still an elite-level defender, still versatile, still in his prime years. But in Flick’s hierarchy, he is no longer the automatic first name on the team sheet in his preferred zones.

To cut through the uncertainty, Kounde will sit down face-to-face with Flick in a crucial meeting to clarify his immediate future. That conversation will carry real weight. Stay and fight for a place in a crowded back line, or accept that the club are ready to cash in and look for a new project.

Arsenal lead, but not alone

Arsenal currently head the queue. They have the need, the tactical fit, and the clear pathway to a starting role in a side built to challenge at the top of the Premier League.

They are not alone, though. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation, aware that players of Kounde’s profile do not come onto the market often, especially with years left on their contract and no formal transfer request in play.

For now, everything hinges on that meeting in Barcelona. If Kounde decides his future lies elsewhere, Arsenal will be ready. If he chooses to stay and fight, a club in North London may be forced back to the drawing board, still searching for the defender to hold their season together.
