Arsenal Pursues Vinícius Júnior as Transfer Market Heats Up
Arsenal have moved onto the front foot in the transfer market, sounding out Real Madrid over a sensational move for Vinícius Júnior as Mikel Arteta looks to add a genuine superstar to his Premier League champions.
The London club have made an enquiry for the Brazil international, who has just one year left on his contract at the Bernabéu. Any potential deal is still at an early stage, but the intent is clear: Arteta wants a marquee forward to underline Arsenal’s return to the top and to keep them there.
Last season, Vinícius hit 22 goals for Real and added four more for Brazil at the World Cup. At 26, he is entering his prime, the kind of player a club usually builds around rather than cashes in on. Yet the situation in Madrid is shifting.
Mourinho’s return changes the landscape
José Mourinho’s comeback on a three-year deal has injected uncertainty into several Real careers, Vinícius’s included. With the Brazilian’s contract running down, the club face a stark choice: sell now for a substantial fee or risk losing one of their most valuable assets for nothing next summer.
Mourinho’s relationship with Vinícius already carries baggage. The Portuguese coach drew criticism for remarks he made after Vinícius accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him during a Champions League tie in February, when Mourinho was in charge of the Portuguese side. “Something happens, always,” Mourinho said of games involving Vinícius, a line that sparked outrage. Prestianni was later banned for six matches after admitting to using homophobic language towards the forward.
That history, coupled with a ticking contract clock, has encouraged clubs across Europe to test Real’s resolve. Arsenal are among the first to move.
Arsenal’s attack takes shape
Arteta’s squad is already being reshaped with a champion’s swagger. Arsenal have added Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a £34m deal, bolstering their attacking options with a wide forward who brings direct running and goals. Tzolis becomes the club’s third summer arrival, following Piero Hincapié – whose loan has been turned into a permanent move – and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, signed after his contract at Leeds expired.
The pattern is clear: depth, youth, and competition in key areas. But Vinícius would be something else entirely. A statement. A player to tilt title races and Champions League nights.
Arsenal are not short of alternatives, either. Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain are also being tracked as the club weigh up how best to reinforce a forward line already brimming with talent but still seeking that one undisputed headliner.
Not every pursuit has gone their way. Morgan Rogers, heavily admired at the Emirates, has joined Chelsea instead in a £117m move, a British record fee. Arsenal had drawn the line at around £80m for the England international and refused to be dragged into a bidding war that would blow apart their valuation.
They walked away. That restraint may yet give them room to attack a deal for Vinícius if Real decide to open the door.
Another Brazilian on the radar
The Brazilian theme does not end there. Arsenal remain keen on Bruno Guimarães, with the Newcastle midfielder long viewed as an ideal fit for Arteta’s high-tempo, technically demanding midfield.
After Newcastle’s 1-1 pre-season draw at Gateshead on Saturday, Eddie Howe underlined how reluctant he is to lose his playmaker.
“We don’t want to lose our best players,” Howe said. “I’ve spoken to him [Guimarães] as I would do. Bruno is just a fantastic person. We’ve had some really good conversations, both before the World Cup, during the World Cup and after the World Cup. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future. That’s for other people to speculate about.”
His words captured the reality of the market. Newcastle want to keep Guimarães. Arsenal want to test that resolve. Somewhere in between lies the fee that will decide whether the Brazilian stays on Tyneside or joins the growing South American core in north London.
A champion acting like a champion
For the first time in more than 20 years, Arsenal go into a season as Premier League title holders. The recruitment drive reflects that status. Tzolis, Hincapié and Meslier strengthen the spine and the squad. Vinícius Júnior and Bruno Guimarães would change the ceiling.
The question now is not whether Arsenal are serious. Their moves, their targets and their refusal to overspend on Rogers have already answered that.
The real question is how far they are prepared to go – and how many giants of the European game they are willing to confront – to land the Brazilian stars who could define the next era at the Emirates.
