Arsenal Offers Myles Lewis-Skelly to Chelsea and Manchester United
Arsenal’s midfield rebuild has claimed a surprise potential casualty. Myles Lewis-Skelly, the Hale End graduate fast-tracked into the first team last season, is being offered to both Chelsea and Manchester United in the wake of Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival.
Nineteen years old. Fresh contract signed only last year. Thirty-six appearances in all competitions last season, but just 19 starts. And now, suddenly, available.
Guimaraes’ £75million move over the weekend has shifted the ground under Lewis-Skelly’s feet. With Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Guimaraes crowding the centre of the pitch, Arsenal’s once-precious prospect is drifting towards the market. Those close to the situation believe that if Chelsea table a strong offer, Arsenal will struggle to turn it down.
Chelsea alerted – again
This is not the first time Chelsea have tracked Lewis-Skelly. The midfielder has history at Cobham from his youth days and has remained on the club’s radar, even as he established himself at the Emirates.
Now, he has been formally offered to the west London club, as well as to Manchester United. Whether Chelsea act is another matter entirely.
They have already signed 10 players this summer, including pre-agreed deals, for just over £270million. The focus at Stamford Bridge has shifted towards trimming the squad, not inflating it. But this is Chelsea. When a player they like becomes available, the plan has a habit of changing.
A mixed audition at Arsenal
Pre-season has given Lewis-Skelly an unexpected platform. With Rice, Zubimendi, Merino and Guimaraes all absent, he has started every friendly as a defensive midfielder.
It has not been seamless. His performances have been mixed in that deeper role, a contrast to the outstanding form he showed at the end of last season as a left-sided No. 8 – a run that earned him a start in the Champions League final. That late surge underlined his ceiling. The current reshuffle underlines his vulnerability.
Arsenal are no longer in a position where promising academy players are guaranteed patience. With major investment in midfield, the club now has the luxury – and the ruthlessness – to cash in if the price is right.
Chelsea’s puzzle in midfield and defence
If Chelsea do move, Lewis-Skelly would walk into a crowded but evolving core.
Xabi Alonso already has Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, Valentin Barco and Enzo Fernandez in midfield. Fernandez’s future has carried an air of uncertainty, yet he is expected back in training this week and there is an internal expectation he will stay for Alonso’s first season.
Lewis-Skelly’s appeal lies in his versatility. He is naturally a central midfielder, comfortable operating as a deeper pivot or higher up the pitch, but he can also cover on the left side of defence. That flexibility matters at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have moved to address left-back already. Pep Chavarria has been signed, subject to official confirmation, while Jorrel Hato is another option on that flank after Marc Cucurella’s departure earlier in the summer. Even so, a player who can bridge midfield and left-back offers tactical variety that Alonso tends to value.
The decision
For Arsenal, this is a test of how far they are willing to go in reshaping a squad that reached a Champions League final. For Chelsea, it is a question of discipline versus opportunity: stick to the outgoings plan, or seize a chance to bring in a 19-year-old England international with Premier League experience and European pedigree.
Manchester United’s interest adds another layer, but the sense around the deal is clear: if Chelsea decide Lewis-Skelly is worth breaking their current stance for, Arsenal will listen.
