Arsenal Leads Race for Leicester Teen Jeremy Monga
Arsenal have stepped to the front of the line for Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga, with the 16-year-old indicating he favours a move to the Premier League champions over rival offers from Chelsea and Manchester United.
The highly rated youngster has been on the radar of all three clubs during this summer window, but the picture is beginning to sharpen. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are now actively pushing to close a deal after receiving encouragement that Monga would agree to join them.
That preference matters. Chelsea called. United watched closely. Yet when a teenager with options at the top of the English game leans toward the club holding the title, negotiations tend to accelerate.
Leicester, though, still hold a measure of control. Despite their recent relegation from the Championship and the financial and sporting uncertainty that follows, the Foxes moved early to protect their position with Monga. The winger has already agreed a professional contract that comes into effect when he turns 17 on 10 July, giving Leicester the right to command a transfer fee rather than lose him for a minimal sum.
It leaves the club in an awkward but familiar modern dilemma: cash in on a prized academy asset to ease the strain of life outside the top two tiers, or fight to keep a player who may see his future elsewhere.
For Arsenal, it is another targeted move in the youth market, a chance to bring in a wide player whose development can be shaped in-house. For Leicester, it could be the latest reminder of how quickly the game strips away its brightest talents once relegation bites.
