Alejandro Balde has entered a make-or-break stretch at Barcelona. Four months to change minds. Four months to prove he still belongs.
The 22-year-old full-back stayed put in the summer, not because the club didn’t listen to offers, but because no move materialised. Manchester United were sounded out as a possible destination, yet the window closed with Balde still at Camp Nou and still on the fringes of Hansi Flick’s plans.
That might turn out to be his last big chance.
Flick wants more – and Balde knows it
Inside the dressing room, the message has been clear. Flick expected more from the academy graduate. Not just in flashes, not just in favourable games, but as a consistent, reliable option at left-back.
So Balde isn’t only chasing minutes. He is fighting an image. The coaching staff need to trust him, to see him as dependable, and that perception has slipped.
The next few months will decide whether that can be repaired.
He knows what is being asked of him. Training sessions now carry a different weight: every duel, every sprint, every tactical drill becomes part of his case to stay. Barcelona still demand a high level from their full-backs – physically, technically and mentally – and Balde has to show he can meet that standard week after week.
The problem is obvious. The queue in front of him is already long.
A crowded left flank and a shrinking window
Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo currently sit ahead of Balde in the pecking order on the left. That traffic makes his task brutal. To climb back into contention, he has to outwork them, outplay them, and convince Flick he offers something they do not.
At the same time, Barcelona are running their own calculations.
Balde is not just a player; he is an asset. His market value is estimated at €30–40 million, a significant figure for a club that continues to balance sporting ambition with financial pressure. If his role does not grow by January, the option of a sale will be back on the table, this time with far more urgency.
A departure would almost certainly force Barça to accelerate their hunt for a specialist left-back. That is where Jorge Salinas re-enters the conversation.
Salinas on the radar – but at a rising cost
Within the club, Salinas is already seen as one of the prime candidates to strengthen the position if Balde moves on. The young Racing Santander defender fits the profile Barcelona like to explore: potential, projection, and room to grow.
But the landscape is shifting there too. Racing Santander have raised Salinas’ release clause, a decision that could make any approach more complicated and more expensive. If Balde is sold, rival clubs will know Barcelona need a replacement, and that urgency rarely comes cheap.
For now, there is no rush. No ultimatum on the table. The January window is still distant enough for Barcelona to watch, wait and judge.
That suits everyone.
Balde still has youth, athleticism and a strong market value in his favour. More importantly, he holds the only currency that truly matters in this debate: performances. If he delivers them between now and January, the conversation changes.
If he doesn’t, Barcelona’s left-back of the future may end up wearing a different shirt.
